Perpetrators of Bayelsa violence’ll be punished – IG
The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, says that perpetrators of the violence that marred the Bayelsa supplementary poll will be punished.
He stated that investigation to apprehend the masterminds had commenced, noting that three people lost their lives during the election.
Arase, who stated this on Tuesday when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, visited him, explained that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership was being driven by the rule of law, accountability, technology and intelligence-led policing.
“The violence during the Bayelsa supplementary poll is regrettable but let me assure you that the perpetrators will be brought to book soon. Investigation has commenced to unravel the people behind the incident that led to the death of three people,” the IG said.
He said the police had embarked on projects aimed at enhancing the intelligence of the Force to strengthen its operational capacity.
Arase said that the police was also pursuing a policy framework targeted at situating functions within the rule of law.
He said that in order to boost public confidence, the Force had established the Compliant Response Unit to monitor police misconduct.
The IG said since inception, the CRU had received and processed 1,268 complaints from members of the public.
